While barely 20 and an undergraduate, along with a few others, she started the Deaf Art Movement. By 25 her artwork had been published in over 10 books. By 40 she had created an international symbol of sign language interpreting, and had her design work published on over 2000 book covers. B y 45, after rededicating her life to studio art, she had completed over 150 pieces and defined a new art genre: Deaf Pop Art. She has taken more photographs of famous people using the ILY sign than most people can name. She found herself in Japan and within days of her arrival was living with a Deaf host family and being interviewed on Japanese TV.

About the Author
James W. Van Manen was born in Sonoma CA, the second son to Deaf parents. He is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). Dr. Van Manen earned a BA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of Northern Iowa. He earned his MA in Linguistics of Signed Languages from Gallaudet University in 1997 and completed his Ph.D. in Administration, also from Gallaudet University. He has worked as a college professor in Chicago IL, Indianapolis IN, and Fremont, OH, He was the director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services in Indiana for eight years and has worked as an an ASL-English Interpreter in Iowa, Ohio, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, Indiana, and Illinois. He has loved Pop Art since he first saw it in the 1970s. Keith Haring and Ann Silver have been his favorite artists since he learned of their art. In 2003, he bought one piece of art by Silver that had an i mpact on his life. While he has never been a full-time artist, he has been a strong supporter of Deaf Art and Deaf artists. Van Manen proudly lives in downtown Chicago. He is Associate Professor in the ASL-English Interpretation Department at Columbia College Chicago.
